چکیده

Abstract Context The Sanjiangyuan region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau—also known as “Three Rivers’ Headwaters”—is origin Yellow, Yangtze, and Mekong Rivers therefore key water source for hundreds millions downstream residents. Protecting this region’s ecosystems is a priority sustainable development in China Asia. An important social dimension long-established widespread presence Tibetan Buddhism, particularly manifested large number monasteries throughout region. However, influence cultural factors on environmental change remains largely understudied here. Objective We focus two types spatial associations—point-point point-area features—to quantitatively investigate effects Buddhist land use/cover (LUCC) surrounding landscapes. Methods conduct spatially-explicit analysis periods, 1990–2000 2010–2015, to identify quantify distributions LUCC compared village communities that lack monasteries. Results found highly correlated with preservation natural ecosystems, specifically grasslands forests. Within monastery buffer zones radii between 1 10 km, 7.13–9.30% more grassland area 7.14–7.47% forest remained around villages. This contrast decreased increasing distance monastery/village. Overall, built-up areas were also much smaller than villages, while unused was commonly transformed forests Conclusions These findings strongly support idea culture, through its physical institutions communities, are instrumental achieving desired landscape conservation outcomes.

Evolutionary diversifications of plants on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is the highest and one of the most extensive plateaus in the world. Phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and ecological studies support plant diversifications on the QTP through multiple mechanisms such as allopatric speciation via geographic isolation, climatic oscillations and divergences, pollinator-mediated isolation, diploid hybridization and introgression, and ...

Cortical Thickness of Native Tibetans in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE High-altitude environmental factors and genetic variants together could have exerted their effects on the human brain. The present study was designed to investigate the cerebral morphology in high-altitude native Tibetans. MATERIALS AND METHODS T1-weighted brain images were obtained from 77 Tibetan adolescents on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (altitude, 2300-5300 m) and 8...

Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in Plateau Pika (Ochotona curzoniae) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are an emerging group of zoonotic pathogens. Ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC. In this study we determined the prevalence and characteristics of the STEC in plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China. A total of 1116 pika samples, including 294 intestinal contents samples, 317 fecal samples, and 505 intestinal...

Mapping risk of plague in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China

BACKGROUND Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China is known to be the plague endemic region where marmot (Marmota himalayana) is the primary host. Human plague cases are relatively low incidence but high mortality, which presents unique surveillance and public health challenges, because early detection through surveillance may not always be feasible and infrequent clinical cases may be misdiagnosed. ...

Occurrence of perfluorinated compounds in fish from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were found in fish muscle collected from high mountain lakes in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the highest and biggest plateau on Earth. In 96% of the total fifty-nine fish samples were found detectable perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) as prominent PFCs, while only three for perfluorooctanoate (PFOA). The mean PFOS concentrations in fish muscle ranged 0.21ng/g-5.20...
